Calle Mayor is a main street leading from Puerta del Sol to Almudena Cathedral. In the Middle Ages, it was home to various fairs, taverns, gambling houses, and brothels. It was also where the fates of the city's rulers were decided, and where the history of Madrid itself changed: in 1622, the second greatest count of Spain, Juan de Tassis Villamediana, was killed on Calle Mayor. And in 1906, during a wedding ceremony near the Sacramento church, an attempt was made on the life of King Juan Carlos I's grandfather, Alfonso III. Over time, the passions died down, and Calle Mayor became one of the most suitable streets for walking in central Madrid.
As you walk along it, you will see the famous Museo del Jamon, one of the oldest squares in the city, Plaza de la Villa, the house where Lope de Vega was born... And if you turn on our audio guide, we will tell you about another dozen interesting places that are literally just two steps from Calle Mayor and are definitely worth seeing!
