Curiously, the main entrance to Almudena Cathedral, located on the side of the Royal Palace, was opened only once in its lifetime. This happened in May 2004, when the wedding of Crown Prince Felipe and journalist Letizia Ortiz took place here.
Despite the fact that entry to the cathedral through these majestic doors is closed to ordinary mortals, it is still worth coming here. At the very least, to admire the sculptures located on the facade. In the center is the statue of Madrid's patroness, the Virgin Mary of Almudena, after whom this cathedral is actually named. To her left is Saint Isidore with his wife Maria, and to the right are Saint Teresa and Saint Fernando.
If you stand facing the cathedral with your back to the Royal Palace, the climb to the observation deck will be on your right. Be aware that to reach the top of the cathedral, you will cover part of the way by elevator, but you will also have to walk a little. However, the view from there is worth the effort!
