Flamenco is a traditional Spanish genre that combines dance, song, and musical accompaniment. Translated from Latin, "flamma" means "fire". When you arrive in Madrid, be sure to visit a restaurant where flamenco shows are held.
One of them is Corral de la Moreria, a venue opened back in 1956 by Manuel del Rey. It is famous throughout the world for its flamenco performances, and it is also conveniently located in the very heart of Madrid, not far from the Royal Palace.
Over its more than half-century history, the walls of Corral de la Moreria have seen quite a few celebrities, among them Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Gary Cooper, Henry Kissinger, Nicole Kidman, Richard Gere.
The most popular flamenco artists perform at Corral de la Moreria, staging evening and late-night shows here every day. The atmosphere of the restaurant transports visitors several centuries back: the venue is furnished with antique furniture, lamps from the 18th-19th centuries, and cornices with Arab motifs. It is believed that this is exactly what real "flamenco tablaos" looked like in the old days - stages where this magnificent art was born.
In addition, Corral de la Moreria is famous for its national cuisine. Here you can try Iberian ham, Andalusian gazpacho, rice pudding with caramel and mandarin sorbet, and much more.
