Top 10 attractions in Kyiv:

1. Khreshchatyk (Khreshchatyk) – Kyiv’s main street. Only 1,200 metres long and fully pedestrian, it is lined with imposing Stalinist Empire buildings.

2. Maidan Nezalezhnosti, which means “Independence Square”, is the epicentre of the country’s political life and a favourite gathering place, decorated with fountains, sculptures, and monuments.

3. Saint Sophia Cathedral was founded by Yaroslav the Wise in 1037. It was rebuilt later, but inside it still preserves the world’s most complete ensemble of original mosaics and frescoes from the first half of the 11th century.

4. Andriyivskyy Descent is practically an open-air museum. Many of the houses on this street were once home to famous writers, artists, and scholars, and today concerts and performances take place here every day.

5. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, snow-white and crowned with golden domes, is visible from afar and strikingly beautiful. This historic and cultural preserve contains 122 architectural monuments from the 11th–18th centuries.

6. The Motherland Monument is a majestic sculpture of a woman with a shield and sword, visible from almost anywhere in the city. At the foot of the monument is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War.

7. Saint Volodymyr’s Cathedral is an outstanding monument of Neo-Byzantine architecture, decorated with paintings by the famous artists Vasnetsov, Svedomsky, and Nesterov.

8. National Museum of the History of Ukraine. It houses archaeological finds, sculpture and painting, collections of weapons and coins from different eras, and examples of glass and porcelain.

9. Golden Gate. One of the few surviving monuments of defensive architecture from the time of Yaroslav the Wise and Kyivan Rus.

10. Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life of Ukraine in Pyrohiv is the largest heritage complex in Eastern Europe. Across 150 hectares you can see wooden architecture from the 16th–19th centuries and authentic household items.
