The Potato Museum in Munich is the first of its kind in Europe. It opened in 1996 and, unlike other potato museums in Germany and other countries around the world, it reflects above all not the agricultural role of the vegetable, but reveals its artistic and cultural image.
Altogether, the museum has eight exhibitions: history (starting with the Incas and ending with a familiar everyday dish), the botanical aspect (inflorescences, tuber formation), the sowing of potato fields and the harvest, scenes at the market, the use of the vegetable in other industries (in the manufacture of chewy candies, textile production), the so-called cabinet of rarities, where illustrations and various rare materials about potatoes are collected, and, finally, a story about the consumption of the product as food by representatives of different social classes. A significant part of the exhibition is devoted to the presentation of ancient books dedicated to… can you guess? that's right, potatoes!
