The Discovery of America Gardens, also known as the Descubrimiento Gardens, are located, quite logically, in Columbus Square. They are a memorial complex consisting of blocks of various allegorical shapes, in which the sculptor Vaquero Turcios captured the grandeur of the discovery made by Christopher Columbus.
The blocks themselves are inscribed with sayings by famous people dedicated to the appearance of the New World on the world map.
The Descubrimiento Gardens were officially opened on May 15, 1977. Before that time, the Mint was located on this site, having been moved elsewhere in 1970. Today, Columbus Square and the adjacent Discovery of America Gardens form a single space where both locals and visitors to Madrid enjoy strolling.
