Happy Valley Racecourse, whose name translates as “happy valley,” is considered one of the most popular places in Hong Kong. It was built in 1846 on the site of swamps and rice fields, and for more than 150 years people have been placing bets and winning big money here. During the season (from September to June), races are held several times a week – mainly on Wednesdays, weekends, and public holidays.
Residents of Hong Kong adore horse racing and love to gamble! The stands often gather up to 50 thousand fans. According to statistics, in one season Hong Kong residents spend about 13 billion US dollars on bets, though all the money raised goes to charity.
It should be said that tourists have an advantage: a spectator visiting Happy Valley Racecourse for the first time has the right to choose a seat in any stand and in any row, wherever the view is better. Two conditions: you must have your passport with you and be of legal age - persons under 18 are not allowed into the racecourse.
Having come to admire the racehorses, be sure to visit the “Parade Ring” stable and see that they are kept in royal conditions. The horses rest from their work to music and bathe in specially equipped pools.
At the museum at the racecourse you will learn everything about the history of jockeying in Hong Kong and watch тематические documentary films. In the souvenir shop, you can buy something to remember this amazing place.
