Munich has the reputation of being the most theatrical city in Germany, a home of performing and visual arts, a place where creativity and talent are concentrated. It is no surprise that it was here that a museum dedicated to one of humanity's most important arts - theater - was opened.
Deutsches Theatermuseum has assembled a magnificent collection of items related to the history and traditions of Western European theatrical culture. The museum features exhibitions of props and sets from the most famous performances. The collection of autographs by famous actors from Germany and other countries of the world is also impressive, numbering more than 500 thousand items. And the collection of photographs of actors and their performances on theater stages in Bavaria contains several million images. Various documents and graphic works related to performances are also collected here.
The German Theatre Museum is located not far from Hofgarten, in the building where the foundation named after the famous dramatic actress Clara Ziegler had previously been located, and it was from this foundation that the collection of theatrical history items began. Ziegler died in 1909, and a year later the Theatre Museum was opened in her villa.
In 1944, the building was badly damaged during the bombing and was restored only 9 years later. The Theatre Museum resumed its work, and in 1979 it even received national status.
