The museum's exhibition tells how people lived in Bavaria, from the Stone Age (about 100 thousand years BC) to the early Middle Ages. Unique archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, items from the Roman period, as well as the Modern era are displayed here. Temporary exhibitions of Bavaria's cultural and historical heritage are periodically held here, but there are also permanent exhibitions.
The museum was established in 1885 by decision of King Ludwig II. Today, it has 300 sq. m of exhibition space, which houses about 6000 exhibits. These include antique jewelry, coins, masks, engravings, household items, illustrations, and fragments of ceramics. Simply walking around the museum is not very interesting; it is better to book a guided tour, of course, if you understand German well.
There is also a cafe and a small souvenir shop where you can buy postcards and cute trinkets as keepsakes. The archaeological museum building adjoins the National Museum of Bavaria, so the "journey into the past" can be continued, adding new knowledge and impressions to it.
