Amber, foamy, aromatic, and delicious beer - isn't that what 6 million tourists come to Munich for every autumn? And in order to get a thorough understanding of the varieties of this intoxicating drink and choose only the best, be sure to visit the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum.
It opened only in 2005, although the idea of creating it was voiced more than 40 years earlier. For several decades, the organization "Munich Oktoberfest Museum" tried to obtain suitable premises. In the end, realizing that nothing could be achieved from the authorities, they organized the Wagner charitable foundation - the oldest family of brewers. With the funds it raised, the society bought one of Munich's old beer houses, built in 1327.
During the museum tour, you will learn everything about the history of beer, which goes back more than 5 millennia - the intoxicating drink was consumed by the Sumerians and Babylonians. You will be told what types of beer are consumed in different countries, how European monks brewed it in the Middle Ages, and what the 1516 "Beer Purity Law" states, which, by the way, is still observed in Germany.
In addition to history, the museum also presents the culture of drinking this beverage magnificently. Here you will see a variety of beer goblets, cups, and glasses. Traditional German mugs with exquisite painting and embossed pewter lids will leave no one indifferent, because they are not just tableware, but true works of art.
The halls dedicated to Oktoberfest occupy 2 floors and tell the story of the largest folk festival in the world, which began 200 years ago with a feast on the occasion of a royal wedding.
