The Ivan Honchar Museum is usually officially designated with the subtitle "Ukrainian Center of Folk Culture." It was opened in Kyiv in 1993 thanks to Ivan Honchar, a well-known artist, sculptor, and public figure. He began collecting his collection of works of Ukrainian folk art back in the late 1950s, traveling around the country and seeking out not only the creations of folk craftsmen, but also paintings by professional artists that could not be exhibited in state museums.
In 1993, when all exhibition venues in the country were focused only on Ukrainian art of the Soviet period, the Ivan Honchar Museum became a unique place where one could see truly folk culture without any restrictions.
The museum's collection includes over 15 thousand items. All of them are objects of artistic and ethnographic value: ceramic изделий, painting (paintings, icons, graphics), textiles, and folk musical instruments. An equally unique place was chosen for the collection - the museum is housed in a building that is an architectural monument of the 18th century.
