Updated for 2026: This short riverside walk remains an easy, rewarding way to see some of Berlin's most distinctive modern buildings, all within a very manageable stretch of the Spree.
House of World Cultures (HKW)

Berlin's House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, or HKW) occupies the former Congress Hall on the edge of the Tiergarten. Today it is one of the city's key venues for exhibitions, screenings, concerts, performances, and talks, with a strong global focus. Even if you're here mainly for the architecture, the building itself is the attraction: that sweeping roofline looks especially good from the riverside.
Federal Chancellery

Germany's Federal Chancellery (Bundeskanzleramt) is the headquarters of the federal chancellor and one of the signature buildings in Berlin's government district. The huge white complex on the Spree feels monumental without being heavy, and its giant circular opening makes it instantly recognizable. You won't see much of the interior, but from the embankment it's a memorable example of modern civic architecture.
Paul-Löbe-Haus

The Paul-Löbe-Haus is one of the main office buildings of the German parliament, the Bundestag, in Berlin's government quarter. It grew out of the "Federal Ribbon" plan, which was meant to tie both sides of the Spree into a single civic landscape after reunification. Together with the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus across the river, it forms a crisp, confident ensemble linked by a bridge that looks especially striking from the waterfront.
Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus

The Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus stands opposite the Paul-Löbe-Haus as part of the same riverside parliamentary complex. Opened in 2003 and named after politician and women's rights campaigner Marie Elisabeth Lüders, it houses important Bundestag research and library services. The broad curves, pale stone, and bridge over the Spree make it one of the most photogenic stops on this short walk.
