Munich's main synagogue, Ohel Jakob ("Jacob's Tent"), is a modern landmark on St.-Jakobs-Platz. It opened on November 9, 2006, a date chosen to mark the anniversary of Kristallnacht and to honor the Jewish community devastated by Nazi persecution.
Designed by Rena Wandel-Höfer and Wolfgang Lorch, the building combines a solid stone base with a luminous, tent-like roof. It may look boldly contemporary at first glance, but the design is rich in symbolism, evoking both the biblical tabernacle and the long journey of the Jewish people.
