Surprising as it may seem, if you look at Hatta Road leading from Dubai on a weekend, you will see quite a lively flow of cars heading toward the desert. It would seem, what could be interesting in sandy hills amid the scorching heat? The object of interest for thousands of locals and tourists has become the dunes themselves - riding over them in jeeps, quad bikes, camels, and even on skis and sandboards (an analogue of a snowboard) is a very exciting and enticing activity that attracts more and more people.
One of the most visited places in the desert is the 'Big Red' dune, also known as "Al Hamar." Big - because it is large, even enormous - its height is almost 100 meters, and Red - because the increased content of iron oxides gives the sand of Al Hamar dune a rich red оттенок.
The main entertainment here is riding quad bikes or jeeps. Those who have tried it claim that the emotions and adrenaline level are about the same as riding big roller coasters.
You can hire transport for extreme driving in the vicinity of Al Hamar, but keep in mind that you should not insist on going to the dunes on your own. One of the rules of desert racing is traveling in a chain of several jeeps, so your fellow thrill-seekers can always come to your aid: tow you out or help if your jeep overturns on the sandy waves.
