In Milan's Indipendenza Gardens, you can find one inactive but still interesting fountain. What makes it curious is that it was installed not in honor of some ancient god or Italian military leader, but to immortalize the memory of a character from a famous children's fairy tale - Pinocchio.
The idea behind creating this monument is actually not quite as simple as it seems at first glance. Much is explained by the phrase of the poet Antonio Negri, carved on the base of the monument and in free translation meaning approximately the following: "Does it amuse you that I was a marionette? But are you sure you have tamed the marionette living inside you?" If you look at the monument, you will see how from the figure of the marionette lying at the foot of the monument, the sculpture depicting a real boy - Pinocchio - seems to "grow".
The monument by Attilio Fagioli became, from the moment of its unveiling, an object of close attention not only from townspeople and tourists, but also from vandals. It is said that originally there was a sculpture of a cat on the side of this monument, which was later stolen. Still later, unknown persons broke Pinocchio's famous nose. Since 2004, an инициативная group led by the granddaughter of the fountain's creator, Sandra Tofariari, has been trying to reconstruct the monument to the fairy-tale hero; however, the fountain is still in a very deplorable condition.
