Marienplatz is rightfully considered the main square of Munich. All of the city's most important events have taken place here since the 12th century. For example, in the Middle Ages, fairs were held in the square and knightly tournaments took place.
Today it is just as crowded here, especially in winter, when the entire square turns into one huge Christmas market. Just as 200 years ago, on the eve of Christmas, entire rows of stalls line up, selling souvenirs, gingerbread, knitted and fur items, Christmas decorations, nativity scenes, candles, ceramic figurines, and much more. The sweet aroma of mulled wine hangs over the square...
In summer, there are also always a lot of people at Marienplatz. These are tourists migrating from one souvenir shop to another, and locals who like to stroll here in the evenings, and, of course, street musicians creating a unique atmosphere. As you pass by a beautiful sculpture, don't be alarmed if it suddenly "comes to life" - this is one of the charming entertainments you can often find at Marienplatz. And this is also where the exuberant celebrations of victories by Munich's beloved football team Bayern take place. So if you see joyful fans all around you, you know what it's about ;)
