Karja Kelder is the oldest pub in Tallinn, whose name translates into Russian as “shepherd's cellar”.
This place has been famous for its beer since long ago. Moreover, local craftsmen not only brewed the most delicious drink, but also competed in the quality of how it was served at the table - making special mugs from spruce or juniper was an integral part of any beer tavern. Throughout its history, the pub survived wars and revolutions, and to survive during the Prohibition era, the owners even had to change the establishment's menu, which, however, still made it possible to retain the venue's regular guests.
Today, pub Karja Kelder is not only a first-class brewery with a dozen varieties of beer, but also an excellent restaurant with typical Estonian peasant cuisine: pork knuckle, lamb in apple sauce, boiled pig's ears with sauerkraut, pear and plum pies…
The interior of this place deserves special mention: the low vaulted ceilings are decorated with wrought-iron chandeliers with candles, the furniture is made of solid wood – in short, even the most ordinary lunch at Karja Kelder resembles an exquisite feast in an ancient Estonian castle.
