The Astronomical Museum is located in the very center of Milan, in Brera Palace. Within the walls of the palazzo, built at the beginning of the 17th century on the remains of an ancient monastery, there are also an open-air natural history museum and a botanical garden.
Astronomy lovers who stop by here will be delighted to see instruments that once belonged to the Milan Observatory. It was founded in this palace by the Jesuits as early as 1764, and later, after the order was dissolved, it came under state administration. When conditions for observations in Milan began to worsen, a new observatory was established in Merate, in the province of Lecco. And it was decided to organize an astronomical museum on this site.
Today, among the exhibits of this collection, one can find the Gauss magnetometer of 1835, the Poddjali spectrograph of 1865, and other instruments that astronomers of past centuries used in their work.
