Plaza de Puerta Cerrada, or Closed Gate Square, is located on the site where one of the exits in the fortress wall once stood. It should be noted that this was not the safest passage into the city - bandits often hid here, robberies took place, and even murders occurred. Therefore, the authorities of Madrid decided to seal up this exit in the fortress wall.
Later, during the expansion of the old city's boundaries, the medieval fortifications were demolished; however, the name "closed gate" has remained attached to this square to this day.
When visiting Plaza de Puerta Cerrada, be sure to pay attention to the houses surrounding it - some of them still preserve old paintings and carvings. As a rule, they depict episodes from the life of medieval Madrid and scenes from the Bible. However, not long ago, works by contemporary artists were added to them as well. So this combination has become even more interesting to look at!
