Műcsarnok is a first-class gallery hosting a variety of exhibitions of contemporary Hungarian and international art. The gallery building is located on Heroes' Square, opposite the Museum of Fine Arts. They appeared at approximately the same time, in the 1890s. At that time, the millennium of Hungary was being celebrated, and therefore Budapest acquired new museums, squares, streets, and many other architectural landmarks dedicated to this anniversary.
However, the Műcsarnok art hall was founded earlier, in 1877, on the initiative of the Hungarian National Society of Fine Arts. For several years it was located on Andrássy Avenue, and moved to the new building in 1896.
Even as you approach Műcsarnok, you will be struck by the colorful mosaic adorning the pediment of its facade, which is supported by six columns. Inside, the spacious galleries are filled with light streaming through the transparent roof into the semicircular exhibition halls designed in the form of an apse.
Műcsarnok operates on the model of the German Kunsthalle. That is, the gallery has no collection of its own and, accordingly, no permanent exhibitions. Instead, a large number of temporary exhibitions are held here, very high-quality and interesting, always attracting numerous lovers of art.
