In Sergiev Posad, you can visit many wonderful places, but the most mysterious of them lies outside the walls of the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra, at the Pyatnitskoye Podvorye. This is the chapel "Pyatnitsky Kolodets," whose appearance is connected with a certain legend.
According to it, Venerable Sergius Radonezhsky himself, through his prayers, brought forth a miraculous spring at this spot. Another version claims that there had long been a body of water here, and Sergius simply added a cell next to it. In any case, the water from this spring is considered holy and healing, and even royals often ordered it delivered to the court, several buckets at a time.
The chapel by the well was built approximately at the beginning of the XVII century, but no exact records of this have survived. By the end of the century, the old building was rebuilt, giving it a more modern and presentable appearance. The result was a charming ornate chapel of round shape in the Baroque style. The octagonal lower part is decorated with attached columns, and above it are two proportionally diminishing tiers placed one on top of the other, crowned by an Orthodox cross.
Two periods of restoration work, carried out in 1963 and 1976, returned the chapel "Pyatnitsky Kolodets" to its original appearance. In 1997, after the spring was consecrated, believers received free access to it.
