Perhaps Austrian chocolate is not as famous as Swiss chocolate, yet there are places in Salzburg where you can fully indulge in confectionery delights. Everyone knows about “Mozartkugeln” - delicious balls wrapped in foil bearing portraits of Mozart.
The birthplace of this delicacy is Salzburg, or rather the café of Paul Fürst, who arrived in the city in 1884 and immediately opened his confectionery shop on Brodgasse. It is not known what prompted him to mark the 100th anniversary of Mozart's death with the release of a new kind of candy, but the chocolate-covered marzipan balls became extraordinarily popular in Salzburg, and later, in 1905, they even won a gold medal at an exhibition in Paris.
Today, the historic Fürst café-confectionery on Brodgasse still warmly welcomes visitors. The café is now owned by Herbert, the great-grandson of the legendary Paul Fürst. The candies are the same as they were 120 years ago, and the process of making them by hand has hardly changed. The only modern addition is the possibility of ordering the products online.
Here you can sit at a table, order a few classic “Mozartkugeln” or other equally delicious sweets, and happily spend time over a cup of coffee or tea with divine chocolate delicacies.
