Updated for 2026: Kapitelplatz remains one of Salzburg's easiest photo stops, and this sculpture is still a quick, worthwhile pause between the Cathedral, the fortress funicular, and the Old Town streets.
One of the most eye-catching sights beside Salzburg Cathedral is the giant golden sphere in Kapitelplatz. The artwork is called "Sphaera": a lone man balanced on top of a shimmering ball, impossible to miss as you cross the square.
Although visitors often connect it with Salzburg's famous Mozartkugel, this is not a statue of confectioner Paul Fürst. The sweet association makes sense, though. Fürst created the original Mozartkugel in the late 19th century, and the candy went on to become one of the city's best-known souvenirs.
The classic version was handmade from pistachio marzipan, nougat, and dark chocolate, and it is still sold in Salzburg today. If you want the original confection, look for Fürst's traditional blue-and-silver wrapping rather than the gold foil used by many later imitators.
What makes Sphaera so memorable is the contrast: Baroque Salzburg all around, then this cool, playful piece of modern art in the middle of it. Even if you stop only for a few minutes, it is one of those landmarks that instantly stays with you.
