MuseumsQuartier, also known as “MuKva”, appeared relatively recently – in 2001. It is a huge complex of exhibition halls, pavilions, and museums. Interestingly, some of them are housed in former stables that once belonged to members of the royal family.
This quarter covers 60,000 square meters, and it is home to Austria’s largest museums: Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation (MUMOK), the Leopold Museum, and Vienna Kunsthalle.
Seasoned travelers probably already know that museums of modern art are usually housed in very unusual, sometimes even extravagant buildings. The same can be said about the Viennese collection. From the outside, it looks like a giant stone cube without windows. Sometimes unusual objects connected with the exhibitions taking place inside appear on its roof or facade.

The building of the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation already looks quite large from the outside, and inside it seems absolutely enormous. It is all because of the underground floors – thanks to the spacious rooms, there is plenty of space here. Several exhibitions are held at the same time, and workshops are organized for children, teenagers, and adults. Anyone can try their hand at art. The core of the MUMOK collection consists of works of art collected during the lifetime of the great German patron, collector, and industrialist Peter Ludwig and his wife.
Another famous collector was Rudolf Leopold. The neighboring museum, where paintings by outstanding 19th-20th century artists are mainly displayed, bears his name. Most of them worked in the Art Nouveau style. These include Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Friedrich Gauermann, and many others.

International exhibitions, seminars, symposiums, and various video installations are held at Kunsthalle every year. The exhibition hall is also adjoined by cinema and concert halls, which often host film festivals and opera productions.

Children won’t be bored in MuseumsQuartier either. ZOOM Kindermuseum is open for them. It is an entertainment center that is also educational, designed for youngsters. At the entrance, everyone is asked to take off their shoes so they can sit on the floor comfortably, dance, draw, or have fun on the attractions. ZOOM Kindermuseum is divided into four zones dedicated to different senses. And for very young children (up to 6 years old), there is a special zone here that develops all the senses at once; it is called Zoom Ocean.

Interesting events take place not only within the walls of the museums and exhibition complexes, but also outside – on the central square of MuseumsQuartier. City residents often come here just to relax in the fresh air.
