It is believed that the most impressive and majestic Catholic church in Goa was copied from the basilica in Rome.
Two bell towers, a huge dome, columns and pilasters, statues of the apostles in the niches of the main facade - the external appearance of the church recalls the traditions of European architecture.
The main altar of the Church of St Cajetan is dedicated to Our Lady; previously, this landmark even had a different name - "Church of Our Lady of Divine Providence." Now it bears the name of the founder of the Theatine Order, three monks of which built it.
At first they did not receive permission for their activities, since they had been sent to Indian soil as missionaries, without the right to work. But then one of the monks decided on a desperate step: he went to Portugal and convinced the king that the construction campaign was part of the program to convert the natives to Christianity. The church was built in 1661. In addition to the main altar, there are six side altars here.
The interior has the shape of a cross. In the center of the church there is a closed well from an earlier structure. It is assumed that it remained from a Hindu shrine, of which the water source was a part. Now it is covered сверху by the platform of a wooden pulpit.
