This attraction is located right on the northern border of the state of Goa. The fort stands on a steep bank at the mouth of the Tiracol River and can be reached by water. Such a location for building a fortified structure was chosen for a reason: from here there is a good view of the surroundings and the coastal waters of the Arabian Sea.
Built by the people of India in the XVII century, the fort, as often happened in the history of this country, was captured by Portuguese troops just a century later. It was also radically rebuilt at that time.
Long and fierce battles were fought over this strategic site, and in 1825 it became the center of a rebellion organized by the first Portuguese viceroy born on this land. However, the instigators of the protest achieved nothing: they were all killed, and their heads were put on display on bayonets. Nevertheless, the fort became a symbol of freedom - a monument to the struggle for Goa's independence has been erected here.
Part of the fortress wall, the church of St. Anthony, and the inner square have survived to this day. To get into the fort, you need to submit an application for an organized tour, since a luxury hotel has been located here in recent years, and entry to it is restricted. Below there is a restaurant where you can try both European and Goan cuisine.
