This park is located to the north of the bustling tourist district of Kowloon. It was laid out about 40 years ago, and most sources indicate that it was the very first to appear in Hong Kong. Kam Shan is surrounded by 300-meter mountain peaks and is named after the tallest of them, located nearby.
The park covers an area of 3.37 hectares and has four reservoirs. It is famous not so much for its exotic plants - pink myrtle, Hong Kong gardenia, and ivy grow here, for example - as for its rare inhabitants.
Protected species of animals and birds are bred here. The common kingfisher, crested goshawk, greater coucal, fiery shrike - you have probably never even heard most of these names.
However, because of its most popular inhabitants, the park has been nicknamed the "monkey park." There are especially many macaques here, and you can watch their behavior for hours. There are barbecue and picnic areas, as well as jogging paths.
Kam Shan borders another park - Lion Rock, which got its name from the mountain range. Hong Kong residents take great care to protect the nature of their homeland, and skillfully weave cityscapes into natural landscapes, which is why visiting parks like these is especially pleasant.
