In the small village of Kiti there is an ancient church erected in honor of the Most Holy Mother of God. According to legend, it was built by angels in just one night, which is why the church is also called Angel-created or "built by angels".
The church consists of three parts: the 11th-century Byzantine church, the chapel attached to it in honor of the Holy Unmercenaries (Cosmas and Damian), and the Roman chapel, built even later, in the 14th century. If you walk around the church, you can notice all these architectural features.
Originally, the first Christian basilica stood on this site, which historians date to the 5th century. An amazing mosaic made in the 6th century has survived to this day. It depicts the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus in her arms. On both sides of her are the archangels Gabriel and Michael, who are extending spheres to her. Ancient icons of Saint Nicholas and Saint John have also been preserved in the church.
By the way, the church is still active; services are held there, and various church rituals are performed, including wedding ceremonies. And next to the church stands a huge tree that is already many, many years old. Under it, lovers and newlyweds usually make their most cherished wishes. They say they always come true.
