“Newton” is a market where mainly drinks, snacks, delicacies, and dishes from local, as well as Chinese, Indian, or Malay cuisine are sold. The smells are mind-blowing, everywhere things are being fried, steamed, braised… And in this atmosphere of a communal kitchen, you want to try everything at once.
Newton is not the only food center in Singapore, and prices here are slightly higher than elsewhere. However, the food here does not cause concern, and stomach upsets are rare.
Singaporean cuisine is generally considered the highest-quality and healthiest in Asia (after Japanese, of course). Their traditional dishes are composed in such a way that a person becomes healthier. Perhaps that is why the average life expectancy of an ordinary Singaporean is 82 years.
But, of course, everything should be in moderation. Seasoned travelers advise обязательно to try the fried version of Hokkien mee (noodles with seafood), barbecued stingray, or the famous oyster omelet.
At Newton market, you can also sample traditional drinks, for example, green tea or local tea, which is drunk with milk and cloves. Among alcoholic beverages, the most famous is the Singapore Sling cocktail.
