The Hypo cultural foundation was founded in 1983 with the aim of supporting and developing culture. An important contribution to this process was the opening of exhibition halls, whose displays quickly gained the status of some of the most significant events in the cultural life of Munich. The foundation takes an active part in art projects, making many donations and managing museum collections of contemporary art.
The opening in 1985 of the first exhibition hall on Theatinerstraße immediately attracted public attention and made the galleries very popular. The last 60 exhibitions have already been visited by more than five million art lovers. From November 2001 to March 2002 alone, 240 thousand visitors came to see the works of Claude Monet!
Since there are no permanent exhibitions in the galleries, the organizers are very careful in selecting works for temporary displays. At various times, Picasso, Gauguin, Miro, Giacometti - this is only a brief list of famous names from among the many great masters whose works Munich has seen.
