In Munich there is a true kingdom of crystals and gemstones, open to everyone who wants to learn more about mineralogy in an accessible and engaging way.
The Museum of Crystals is located in the building of Ludwig Maximilian University. The first mentions of the formation of this grand collection of minerals date back to 1858, when two collections were merged - that of Duke Maximilian and the Mannheim collection. Today, this exhibition is one of the largest and most authoritative in the world, with 20 thousand stone specimens.
It is extremely interesting to visit this museum and explore mineral specimens from all over the world, because these are not only simple rough stones, but also sparkling diamonds, emeralds, and rare crystal forms. The pride of the museum is a selection of diamonds that once belonged to King Ludwig of Bavaria, as well as a collection of Russian emeralds. There are even stones of extraterrestrial origin here - meteorites, some of which you can even touch with your hands. During the tour, you will be told and shown how crystals are formed, and how artificially grown treasures are created.
The Museum constantly hosts various thematic exhibitions presenting valuable finds from different countries and continents. Special attention is given to geology as a science; seminars on this topic are held here and are attended by large numbers of both ordinary visitors and scientists.
