1. Brandenburg Gate

If tourists were ever polled on the subject of “Berlin's calling card,” the Brandenburg Gate would surely win by a landslide. It is the first thing that comes to mind at the mention of the German capital. No wonder – even Napoleon could not resist taking the famous quadriga above the columns back to Paris with him. After Bonaparte's defeat, however, the chariot with the goddess of Victory returned home.

2. Reichstag

Parliament buildings in any country usually look impressive, but the Reichstag is not just a seat of government – it is a true symbol and a historic landmark. In May 1945 it was the main target of the Soviet soldiers storming Berlin. Today, meanwhile, almost every tourist who comes to Germany wants to get in here. Seeing the bullet marks with your own eyes, reading the commemorative inscriptions on the walls, and climbing to the observation deck inside the glass dome is a must-do on any trip to Berlin.

3. Berlin Cathedral

The majestic cathedral impresses not only with its exterior but also with its lavish interior. It is the largest Protestant church in Germany. Inside, alongside the carved gilded altar and colorful stained-glass windows, you will find an old organ and a crypt with the sarcophagi of the Hohenzollern dynasty. From the top of the dome, a wonderful panoramic view of the city opens up – one no photographer will be able to resist.

4. Museum Island

Finding yourself on this island is a real stroke of luck for any curious traveler. Five museums stand here at once, housing highly valuable works of art from Europe and the Middle East. The first collection appeared in this area back in 1830 – it was the Old Museum. Later the New Museum was built, followed by the National Gallery and the Bode Museum. The last to appear was the Pergamon Museum, whose building took more than 30 years to complete.

5. Unter den Linden

Berlin's most famous boulevard begins at the Brandenburg Gate, and its name translates simply as “under the lime trees.” The first avenue appeared here in the mid-17th century thanks to Friedrich Wilhelm, who regularly traveled this road to his hunting grounds. Later his son decided to line the boulevard with splendid buildings, ordering 44 houses that did not fit his idea of beauty to be torn down. Today it is one of the loveliest places in the city and somewhere every tourist wants to visit.

6. Berlin TV Tower

A sunny day is the best time to visit the Berlin TV Tower. Then you can spot the famous reflection in the shape of a cross on its sphere – an optical effect that has inspired no shortage of curious stories. It is also Germany's tallest structure, which is why millions of tourists head up to its observation deck every year to take their own “Berlin at my feet” photos.

7. Gendarmenmarkt

The name itself hints that this was once a gendarmes' market. But in 1773 Frederick the Great – the same ruler who shaped Unter den Linden – ordered the cuirassier regiment's stables demolished and the square built up with handsome buildings. Soon two similar churches appeared here, with a grand concert hall rising between them. Today Gendarmenmarkt is considered one of the most harmonious squares in Europe.

8. Alexanderplatz

Many travelers may be pleased to learn that this beautiful square was named after Tsar Alexander I of Russia. In 1805 he came to Berlin on a visit to Friedrich Wilhelm III, and the king chose this as a way to show his appreciation. The huge Fountain of International Friendship, a high-rise hotel, and the TV Tower all appeared here in the GDR era. The locals only saw the “World Clock” on the day East and West Germany were reunited, after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

9. East Side Gallery

This stretch of the Berlin Wall, which once split Germany into two parts, is now one of the largest open-air galleries in the world. It runs for more than 1,300 meters, and the paintings follow one another like frames in a giant film reel. For a long time the gallery's most famous work and “calling card” was the “Fraternal Kiss” of Brezhnev and Honecker, but it was erased in 2009, supposedly “for the best of reasons.” Even so, there is still plenty to see here – more than 100 paintings created by leading contemporary artists from different countries.

10. Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

More than 2,700 concrete slabs of varying heights – from 0.5 to 5 meters – resemble a vast rippling field stirred by the wind. But that effect is only visible from above; up close, you realize the memorial is made up of rows of gray, anonymous tombstone-like slabs. In the middle of a noisy metropolis, the contrast is especially striking and invites deep reflection. There is also an information center here where you can see documentary evidence of the deaths of many Jewish families.
