Kriminalmuseum is located in the Leopoldstadt district in one of the oldest buildings in the capital of Austria, built back in the XV century. This museum (opened relatively recently, in 1991) will appeal to everyone who is fond of thrillers and horror stories. There are truly impressive exhibits here: photographs of the most terrible crimes committed by the fascists during World War II, skulls, embalmed severed heads with mouths frozen in agonizing screams, murder and execution weapons, as well as a wide variety of devices and mechanisms for torture used in the Middle Ages or even relatively recently...
Photography is permitted in the museum, and its only, but quite significant, drawback is that all the captions for the exhibits are presented only in German.
We should warn especially impressionable travelers: the atmosphere of the museum is quite oppressive and evokes a feeling of despondency, inner fear, and melancholy.
