In 1789, the Russian Empress Catherine II stayed in Riga. She was feeling unwell and was advised to visit Dr. Kunze's pharmacy. Abraham did not miss a beat and offered the Empress his miraculous herbal balsam. Catherine was so pleased with its effect that she authorized its official production.
According to a local legend, even during the renovation this place was filled with the scent of mint, lavender, cinnamon, and rosemary. This magical aroma is still present here today. The cafe has a safe containing 24 kinds of herbs that go into everyone's favorite drink. For 20 euros, you can even watch how it is prepared, and at the same time get a shot of balsam, a cup of coffee, some nuts, and candies with a surprise.
The bar's display window and interior are designed in an antique style. Wrought-iron lamps hang beneath the stone vaults, and massive wooden furniture is everywhere. The waitresses are dressed in appropriate mid-18th-century outfits, which gives this place a unique charm. On the shelves, you can spot genuine 18th-century books, glass vessels from a laboratory, and various copper utensils. Visitors to the bar can buy souvenirs as keepsakes and, of course, an original bottle of Riga Black Balsam - or even two.
