An unusual drinking fountain created in the Art Nouveau style got its name because of its proximity to the northern wall of Barcelona's old town, along which water pipes — canals — were laid. They say that anyone who drinks water from this fountain is sure to return to the beautiful capital of Catalonia. This omen alone secures the fountain an honored place on the list of must-see attractions. Add to this its rich history and its excellent location right at the very beginning of the famous La Rambla boulevard, and you will understand why, while strolling through the city, you should definitely stop by this source of cool, clean water.
The fountain looks like a pot-bellied samovar with four gilded taps, above each of which is a relief Catalan coat of arms. Above the massive cast-iron base rises an elegant lantern with beautiful frosted shades.
Once, very nearby, was the editorial office of the city's main newspaper, La Rambla, whose staff posted the results of football matches involving Barcelona. Fans came here specifically to find out how their favorite team had performed, and on victorious days they held noisy open-air parties on Catalonia Square, which is literally just a couple of steps from here.
