The English Western Church, built in the first half of the 17th century, is the largest in Amsterdam and probably the most historically significant. Many even consider its bell tower Westerkerk Tower a symbol of the city.
This church is located not far from the Jordaan district, but the ringing of its 48 bells on Tuesdays can be heard far beyond it. And this is not just ringing, but melodies of popular songs, which once again characterizes the Dutch approach as unconventional even to the most ordinary things. As the chimes of this church, you can hear, for example, a Beatles song!
You should visit the church at least because only inside will you be able to appreciate the grandeur of the construction of Amsterdam's largest Protestant church. There is also an organ here, painted by the Fleming Gerard de Lairesse in the 18th century. Thanks to the excellent acoustics, classical music concerts are often held in the church.
By the way, this is where Rembrandt, the famous Dutch painter, rests. Unfortunately, the exact place of his burial is unknown – because of his poverty, the artist found rest only in an unmarked grave. Later, a memorial was built indicating the symbolic burial place of Rembrandt.
