The Holocaust Memorial Center was opened in Budapest on April 16, 2004 — just before the 60th anniversary of the genocide of Jews in Hungary. The museum is housed in the building of an old synagogue, built in 1854-1859. It was extensively restored for the opening of the exhibition.
In the inner courtyard of the museum there is a metal weeping willow, also called the tree of life. On it you will find the surnames of 600 thousand prisoners who died during World War II.
In the halls of the Memorial Center, photographs and video footage are displayed, proving the fact of the genocide of Jews. Against the background of constantly playing somber music, numerous testimonies are also presented showing that in difficult times Hungarians always came to the aid of Jews.
After viewing the exhibitions, you can continue exploring Jewish culture in the synagogue. In the solemn, though not cheerful atmosphere of this museum, scientific conferences are often held, and members of the Jewish community also gather.
