Timewheel is perhaps the largest hourglass in the world, installed in Budapest behind the Műcsarnok Gallery, not far from Heroes' Square and Városliget Park. Its height is 8 meters, its weight is 60 tons, and this unique structure is made of red granite, shatter-resistant glass, and stainless steel — it was intended that these materials would help the semi-automatic mechanism work for a long time without failures.
Timewheel was unveiled in 2004 to mark Hungary's accession to the European Union — a new era began for the country. Every year on December 31, this hourglass is turned over with the help of cables, which is also no coincidence: the timewheel symbolizes the fusion of traditions and innovative technologies, and also reminds us of the times when the only force capable of moving a heavy object was physical strength.
