The Spiral Tower, along with the Large Solar Disc, is one of sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro's most outstanding works in Milan.
At the opening of this site, the city's mayor Letizia Moratti stated that this creation is yet another new art symbol of Milan. In turn, Arnaldo Pomodoro noted that it was a great honor for him that the tower was installed in front of such an important place for Milanese art as the Piccolo Teatro. According to the master, his new sculpture symbolizes progress and the evolution of history and life. The spiral represents obstacles on the path of progress, but “the tower's striving to grow upward” speaks of its continuity.
Arnaldo Pomodoro's works, made mainly of bronze or brass, usually take the form of a sphere, cube, or column and can be found all over the world - in Rome, New York, Dublin, Tokyo, Copenhagen, and even the Vatican. One of Pomodoro's sculptures is also in Russia. In 1991, the Prime Minister of Italy presented Mikhail Gorbachev with an object very similar to Milan's Large Solar Disc. You can see this unusual gift at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
