It is believed that this is the place where Jesus was scourged. Here too, Roman soldiers mockingly placed a crown of thorns on his head, and nailed to the cross a plaque with the words "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." It was from here that Christ began his path, carrying the cross to the place of execution.
"Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him beaten. And the soldiers, having twisted a crown of thorns, placed it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him, and said: Hail, King of the Jews! And they struck Him on the cheeks."
