In former times, fortress walls encircled the Old City of Jerusalem around the entire perimeter, but today only the northern and southern parts of the walls remain. The longer, northern stretch of the Jerusalem wall begins at Jaffa Gate, which offers an excellent view of the square and the Tower of David. Moving on from Jaffa Gate, you will skirt the Christian Quarter, which will remain on your right. Next you will encounter Notre-Dame de France, a former hotel that French pilgrims founded for visiting believers. Damascus Gate, or Shechem Gate, along with Jaffa Gate, was once among the most important in the city and led from Jerusalem to Nablus. Heading north, you will also reach the Flower Gate, or Herod's Gate. After that, a stunning view of the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the ancient Jewish cemetery awaits you. And the walk along the Northern Wall ends at the Lions Gate.
