Via Dolorosa begins with Pretoria - the residence and workplace of the Roman procurator of Judea. It is believed that it was here that Pontius Pilate sentenced Christ to death.
To this day, nothing remains of the fortress except the foundation. It, like all of Jerusalem, was destroyed in the 70s AD by the Roman emperor Titus Flavius Vespasian.
Immediately behind Pretoria is the Prison of Christ. It must be admitted that it is rarely open, but if you are lucky, be sure to take a look inside.
