Mahane Yehuda is one of the most famous and colorful places not only among city markets, but also among all the attractions of Jerusalem.
Its history begins at the end of the 19th century, when a relative of the country's former president, Yosef Navon-bey, bought land not far from here, on which he decided to build a residential quarter.
When the area was built, spontaneous traders from neighboring villages began flocking here. The popularity of this market gradually grew, because the local authorities, through their own inattention, did not tax this accidentally formed bazaar.
A century later, Mahane Yehuda became a "separate state" with its own internal order, customs, and even its own dialect spoken by the local traders. The market even has its own anthem, the lyrics of which are posted along its winding lanes.
To even begin talking about the abundance of goods the market stalls can offer is bad form - here you can find absolutely everything the Holy Land has to offer.
