There are quite a few excellent places in Tallinn where you can enjoy a tasty and filling meal. However, among other dining establishments many travelers single out the Peppersack restaurant, whose name translates as “Pepper Sack.” Not surprising, since this is a place where you can turn back time and find yourself in the past!
The restaurant building itself was constructed quite a long time ago - the first mentions of it appeared back in 1370. True, it used to be just a residential house with a barn, but the main thing is the spirit of antiquity, isn’t it? Over its history, the building changed many owners. Around 1520, the premises were bought by a certain Mr. Hans, who earned his living by selling spices. Noblemen called such merchants “pepper sacks.” But Hans was not ashamed of his trade, so he gladly took the pseudonym “Peppersack”.
The restaurant’s interior matches its history: dark corridors, candles instead of lamps, massive wooden tables, overhanging vaults. In addition, real knightly tournaments are held here in the evenings.
The dishes at Peppersack are prepared before visitors’ eyes and are distinguished by original names. Only in this restaurant can you find out what “Lady Margaret’s Weakness” tastes like and sample “Mr. Hans’s Festive Roast.” For groups, there are various feast options for 2, 3, or 4 people. And the best way to wash down the fare is with beer: here it is no worse than in the famous “Beer house”.
One final tip: delicate ladies and graceful young women should share one dish between two, as the portions here are very large.
