This viewpoint is located at the top of Gianicolo Hill. It is not one of the seven hills on which Rome stands, but it offers the most beautiful and sweeping view of the Eternal City.

The hill takes its name from the god Janus — in pre-Christian times his sanctuary stood here. Nothing remains of it today, but there are other attractions. For example, the monastery of Sant'Onofrio at the foot of the hill. It was named after the hermit Saint Onuphrius, who lived for 60 years in the Egyptian desert.

In addition, the monastery houses a museum dedicated to the Italian poet Torquato Tasso, who wrote the poem “Jerusalem Delivered.” Tasso died in this monastery, and his tomb is also here. And if you go a little higher up the hill, you can see an oak tree that was struck by lightning. They say that Tasso often stopped and rested near this charred tree during his walks.

On the way to the top, you can also find the fountain “Acqua Paola,” built in the XVII century by order of Pope Paul V Borghese. It is a majestic structure of white marble and granite with three arches and two niches.

The total height of Gianicolo Hill is 87 meters. At the very top there is a viewing terrace and a cozy park where you can spend time pleasantly while enjoying panoramic views. And if you suddenly hear the roar of a cannon, don't be alarmed. It is fired here every day, announcing the arrival of noon to the surrounding area.
