This majestic building with a sharp tower on the corner, built in the Gothic style, reminds us of one of the most remarkable periods in the life of Catalonia. It was built at the very beginning of the 15th century by order of King Martin the Humane. And he chose an excellent location for this mansion - from here there is a stunning view. That is why the villa was named “Bellesguard”, which translated from Spanish means “beautiful view”.
Five centuries later, the reconstruction of the castle was entrusted to the outstanding Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi. He chose an outwardly ordinary square layout, but with very elegant details. He decorated the portal with a wrought-iron grille, crowned the walls with rows of battlements, and placed a long tower spire at the very top.
The interior of the mansion is also impressive for its original solutions. For example, the intricate system of passages under the roof is entwined by a staircase running in a spiral. It leads to the highest part of the building, where a small terrace is located.
“Bellesguard” is interesting not only for its structural features, but also for its unusual decoration. They say that Gaudi used a plaster mold cast from a pre-prepared model. He coated the bottom of this mold with mortar and covered it on top with small pebbles. As they stuck to it, they created an amazing mosaic, which was subsequently used to decorate doorways, windows, and even drainpipes.
