The tradition of making Venetian masks has a long history. As early as the 14th century, they became famous throughout the world and turned into an integral symbol of the city. Today, they can be found in absolutely any souvenir shop.
However, genuine Venetian masks can only be purchased in specialized ateliers. Among them are the three famous Marega workshops, owned by the mask makers' guild Compagnia dei Mascherai Veneziani.
The simplest Marega masks are made of clay or plaster; they are quite attractive and are well suited as souvenirs, since they cost only 2 euros. However, such pieces are rather heavy. Another type is light, elegant papier-mache masks decorated with feathers or rhinestones; these, in turn, are very fragile and airy. Their price starts at 30 euros.
The most luxurious are masks made of the finest treated leather. These are true works of art, the secret of whose production is known only to some Marega masters. They say that Giacomo Casanova himself wore such masks during his romantic adventures! These rare collectible pieces in the workshop can cost up to 700 euros.
It is also important that in Marega shops-ateliers, in addition to masks, beautiful Venetian costumes of the 18th century are created as well. For the duration of the carnival, antique dresses and tuxedos complete with wigs and shoes can be rented or even purchased.
