The Textile and Costume History Museum is located in the Marquis of Llió Palace, and the number of outfits kept there is simply astonishing. Many of them are authentic garments of dukes and Catalan nobles.
The oldest item in the collection is considered to be a tunic brought from Egypt. They say it was worn as early as the 7th century!
All the items in the museum are arranged in such a way that you can clearly trace how fashion changed from century to century. For example, in the 18th century French fashion clearly dominated, with almost no Spanish flavor at all. The outfits are mainly decorated with silk embroidery, as in the time of Louis XV.
But judging by the costumes of the Catalan nobles, restraint and modesty were not held in high esteem. The higher the rank, the more pompous the outfit. Although after the style of ancient Greece came into fashion, clothing became simpler and more straightforward.
The 19th century is represented here mainly by women's outfits, as fashion for them changed more often than for men. Two dresses attract special attention, their creator, Charles Frederick Worth, is considered the world's first couturier. In addition, the most famous outfits from the collections of modern fashion houses are exhibited here.
Accessory lovers will be delighted by the collection of handbags, hats, gloves, and above all by the footwear display showing shoes worn in different eras. Besides this, numerous fashion magazines are collected here. The oldest of them is 300 years old!
