Updated for 2026: V&D no longer operates as the classic Dutch department store chain described below, but this Kalverstraat address is still right in the heart of Amsterdam's busiest shopping area.
Vroom & Dreesmann, founded in 1887 by Willem Vroom and Anton Dreesmann, became one of the Netherlands' best-known department store chains and a popular stop for mid-range shopping.
Its stores were aimed at middle-class customers, with broad choice and sensible prices that appealed to both locals and visitors.
A typical V&D stocked just about everything: clothing and shoes, electronics, accessories, tableware, books, furniture, and more. Many products were made especially for the chain.
For many travelers, the real highlight was the food section, especially the La Place restaurant, known for fresh salads, pizzas, pastries, good coffee, and an easygoing atmosphere. Friendly service only added to the appeal.
