There are all kinds of museums in Amsterdam; sometimes it seems that the Dutch can make an exhibition out of absolutely anything, and do it stylishly and tastefully. There is even the Tattoo Museum, which opened in 2011. It would seem, what could you tell, let alone show, about tattooing? As it turns out, quite a lot - and in an interesting way.
This museum is located in a historic 19th-century building, and the exhibition space covers about 2000 sq.m. The number of exhibits is impressive - there are more than 40000 of them, and this collection is constantly growing.
The museum is interesting for its approach to presenting the history of the emergence of different tattooing techniques. There are tattoo samples collected from all parts of the world and from different eras. In addition to sketches and illustrations, there is a fairly substantial library, as well as more tangible things: various equipment used for applying tattoos: needles, tattoo machines, and more. The museum's artistic design is very bright and lively, with dynamic lighting and special effects.
In addition to exhibitions, the museum hosts seminars and master classes by leading specialists. If you wish, you can even get yourself a tattoo right on the spot.
